Everton Defender Jarrad Branthwaite Eyes Late World Cup Squad Push
Jarrad Branthwaite, the Everton centre-back, is aiming to make a late surge into England's World Cup squad this summer, despite enduring what he describes as a "very disappointing season" marred by injuries. The 23-year-old has been limited to just three Premier League starts due to a long-term hamstring issue, but he remains hopeful that strong performances in the remaining campaign fixtures can catch the eye of England manager Thomas Tuchel.
Injury Woes and World Cup Ambitions
Branthwaite did not make his first appearance of the season until January, a delay that has significantly impacted his momentum. "To miss all the time I've missed this season, it's had a huge impact on the momentum I had in the last couple of seasons," he explained. However, he now believes his injury problems are behind him and is focused on staying fit to build form. "Hopefully I'm past that now, and I can get a good momentum going, stay injury free, play to the end of the season and push for the World Cup squad hopefully," Branthwaite added.
His goal is clear: to secure a spot among the centre-backs Tuchel will select for the tournament in the United States. "It's got to be [the goal]," he stated. "That was my aim at the start of the season. It's going to be difficult. I think the only thing I can do is go out there and put on good performances every game, and give myself the best possible chance."
Tuchel's Selection and Branthwaite's Versatility
Tuchel's current pool of centre-backs includes players like John Stones, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Dan Burn, and Trevoh Chalobah. Branthwaite acknowledges that his extended absence has likely kept him off Tuchel's radar, but he sees it as a personal challenge. "I've been out for so long and haven't played much football so it's down to me, and my performances, to give myself the best possible chance to be in and around it," he said.
In a recent match, Branthwaite was deployed at left-back during Everton's 1-0 defeat to Manchester United, a role he hopes will showcase his versatility to Tuchel. "It's always good to be able to play multiple positions so hopefully that can have a positive impact on my chances," he noted. He expressed willingness to play wherever needed, stating, "The manager [David Moyes] asked me to play there again, and I'm happy to be on the pitch, happy to be playing there. Obviously, I'd like to be at centre back, but I think Keano [Michael Keane] and Tarky [James Tarkowski] have done well throughout the season. So it's the manager's decision and I'm happy to be playing wherever he plays me."
Past England Experience and Future Hopes
Branthwaite has one England cap to his name, earned under former manager Gareth Southgate, and was included in the provisional 33-man squad for Euro 2024, though he did not make the final cut. Reflecting on his international aspirations, he said, "I've been in and around the England squads. It would just be a dream to go and play at the World Cup and be there. But, like I said, it's down to my performances from now until the end of the season to give myself that chance."
As the season draws to a close, Branthwaite's focus is squarely on proving his fitness and form, with the ultimate prize of a World Cup place driving his efforts. His ability to overcome a challenging season and demonstrate versatility could be key factors in Tuchel's final selection decisions.
