Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly on the verge of selling former Manchester United goalkeeper Matej Kovar to PSV Eindhoven, according to journalist Florian Plettenberg. The deal is expected to be worth €5 million (£4.3 million) with an additional €2 million (£1.7 million) in potential bonuses.
Kovar, 25, initially joined Leverkusen from Manchester United in 2023 for €9 million (£7.78 million) under then-United manager Erik ten Hag, who had sold him. He served as second-choice goalkeeper behind Lukas Hradecky during Leverkusen's Bundesliga title-winning campaign and made six Champions League appearances last season.
After Xabi Alonso left Leverkusen to become Real Madrid head coach at the end of the 2024/25 season, Ten Hag was appointed as his successor. Now, Ten Hag appears ready to sell Kovar for a second time as the new season approaches.
Despite impressing when called upon, Kovar has not been linked with a return to Manchester United. In a 2024 interview with Czech outlet Sport, he stated that there had been no contact from United regarding a comeback. 'No, I have not. It's important for me to start playing regularly and establish a position in Leverkusen,' he said.
Kovar added that United remain close to his heart but acknowledged that his move to Leverkusen made sense. 'Of course, they're still my heart. I spent many years at the club... but we agreed that going to Leverkusen made sense,' he said.
