Aston Villa have agreed terms with Monchi to become their sporting director, following the departure of chief executive Christian Purslow. Monchi is set to join from Sevilla, where he previously worked with Villa manager Unai Emery.
Purslow, who had overseen Villa's day-to-day operations for nearly five years, leaves as part of a club restructuring. The 59-year-old declined an alternative role, with owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens praising his role in the club's transformation.
Monchi, who has a release clause of around £1.7 million, will work closely with Emery on football operations. The manager has been given significant freedom to reshape the squad after leading Villa to European qualification for the first time in 13 years.
The restructuring also saw Chris Heck appointed as president of business operations last month, while Alberto Benito and Pablo Rodríguez have joined the recruitment staff. Villa have already signed Youri Tielemans on a free transfer and are targeting a full-back, winger, and striker, with Harvey Barnes among those of interest. John McGinn and Ollie Watkins are set to receive new contracts.
