Arteta Praises 'Extraordinary' Frank After Spurs Sacking Ahead of Derby
Arteta Hails 'Extraordinary' Frank After Tottenham Axe

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has publicly praised Thomas Frank as "extraordinary" in the wake of his abrupt dismissal by arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur. This development means Spurs are highly likely to have a new manager in the dugout when they host Arsenal in the highly anticipated north London derby next Sunday.

Arteta's Sympathetic Response to Frank's Departure

Reacting to the news ahead of Arsenal's Premier League clash against Brentford on Thursday, Arteta conveyed his sadness at seeing a colleague lose his position. "It is always very sad news when you have a colleague that doesn't continue doing his job because Thomas is an excellent coach, he's an extraordinary man, and he's proven that in the league," Arteta stated.

However, the Arsenal boss was pragmatic about the realities of top-flight football management. "But we know where we are. We know that our responsibility is beyond just performance. And results dictate what happens with us. You have to win a lot of games because at the end, if you don't do that, you're not going to continue, and that's the reality of our job."

The Vulnerability of Premier League Managers

Arteta's own experience underscores this point. He faced significant challenges during his first year at Arsenal, with the club dropping as low as 15th in the Premier League. Since then, he has masterfully turned things around, with Arsenal currently sitting at the top of the league and competing strongly across all competitions.

Frank's sacking marks him as the seventh Premier League manager to lose his job this season, following figures like Ange Postecoglou, who lasted a mere 39 days at Nottingham Forest. When questioned about whether clubs are becoming too impatient, Arteta offered a nuanced perspective.

"In the context of every club it is very different, but it's always a possibility. I can just talk about Frank and what I know as a coach because I faced him many times and how he prepares his teams and what he did at Brentford, too. Or the way they looked in pre-season when we played them. They were really impressive," Arteta explained.

He added, "But at the end as well, this league is so competitive. We are all vulnerable because anybody can beat you on the day, you know that. And that's really tough to manage."

Arsenal's Current Position and Injury Concerns

Arsenal's lead at the summit of the Premier League was recently trimmed to six points after Manchester City's dramatic late comeback against Liverpool. With City in action against Fulham on Wednesday, the gap could narrow further to just three points by the time Arsenal face Brentford.

Arteta also provided updates on key players ahead of the Brentford match. He will make late decisions on the fitness of both Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard. Saka has been sidelined for the past three matches due to a hip issue, while Odegaard has missed two games with a muscular injury, adding an element of uncertainty to Arsenal's preparations.

As the north London derby approaches, the managerial shake-up at Tottenham adds an intriguing layer to the fierce rivalry, with Arteta's comments highlighting the respect and pressures inherent in Premier League football.
