Arsenal have formally requested the Premier League to reschedule their fixture against Everton from December 21 to December 20, citing concerns over player welfare. The Gunners face the prospect of playing two matches within 72 hours if the game remains on Sunday, as their Carabao Cup quarter-final against Crystal Palace is scheduled for Tuesday December 23.
The north London club, currently top of the Premier League, have asked for an 8pm kick-off on Saturday December 20. Manager Mikel Arteta has been vocal about the issue, expressing optimism that a solution would be found. 'From every angle, from the Premier League, from the EFL, from UEFA, all the time the only thing that we talk about is the welfare of the players and the supporters,' Arteta said.
UEFA recently rejected Crystal Palace's request to move their Conference League match against KuPS from December 18 to December 17, which would have allowed Palace to shift their league game against Leeds United. Arsenal, however, have no midweek commitments before the Everton match and would enjoy a week's rest regardless.
The Gunners are bidding for their first top-flight title since the 2004 Invincibles campaign. Arteta's side last played on December 14, a 2-2 draw with Sunderland. The Premier League has yet to respond to Arsenal's request.
