Prestwich sinkhole repairs extend Heywood Road closure for two more weeks
Prestwich sinkhole: Heywood Road closure extended for two weeks

Drivers in Prestwich face up to two more weeks of disruption on Heywood Road as repair works continue following a sinkhole that opened last month. United Utilities has extended the road closure to include the roundabout junction with Heys Road while it carries out 'proactive' work to 'future-proof' the sewer network.

Cause and repair works

Part of Heywood Road was blocked off after a large stretch of tarmac began to buckle. Investigations revealed the cause to be a burst sewer pipe, with United Utilities undertaking repairs in the area.

The extended closure will allow contractors to replace additional sections of pipe and reinforce them with lining. Once this is complete, footpaths along the route will also be reinstated, a spokeswoman for United Utilities said.

Why Prestwich is prone to sinkholes

The town has experienced repeated sinkholes under its roads in recent years because it is largely built on sand. Where leaks occur, the water can wash away the sand, reducing ground stability and putting additional pressure on the pipes.

United Utilities hopes its work to line sewers in key areas will add strength to the network while allowing flexibility in the soft ground. This work has already been completed along 'large sections' under Heys Road.

Official statements and diversion

A spokeswoman for United Utilities said: “The town’s sandy ground conditions can cause movement and place additional pressure on the sewer network, especially in areas with high volumes of traffic. We are taking a proactive approach to future proof the sewer network in the area. This means we are replacing and reinforcing a longer section of sewer to improve resilience.

“While this work is carried out, it has been necessary to close a section of Heywood Road and introduce a signed diversion route. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank customers for their patience while this essential work is carried out.”

A spokeswoman for Bury council said: "The current works and road closure are a continuation of the ongoing repairs on Heywood Road being carried out on behalf of United Utilities. The closure has been extended to include the junction with Heys Road so contractors can access additional sections of the sewer network and carry out further work to help prevent future issues.

"The road will only reopen once it is safe to do so once all worked needed is complete. The signed diversion is via Heywood Road, Scholes Lane and Bury Old Road, and vice versa.

"We recognise the disruption this is causing to residents, businesses and people travelling through the area, and appreciate their patience while the work is ongoing."
