Manchester United have sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjær following an emergency board meeting on Saturday night after the team's 4-1 defeat at Watford. The club plans to announce the departure as a mutual agreement, with compensation details being finalised.
Joel Glazer, the co-chairman, approved the decision. First-team coach Michael Carrick and technical director Darren Fletcher are expected to take interim charge once Solskjær's exit is confirmed.
The defeat was United's fourth in five Premier League games, during which they have conceded 15 goals. David de Gea described the performance as 'embarrassing', saying: 'It's another nightmare. We don't know what to do with the ball.'
Solskjær admitted his side were 'outfought' and had let the fans down, but insisted he could turn things around. However, the board concluded there was no way back after the latest setback, deciding to act before Tuesday's Champions League match at Villarreal.
United are seventh in the league, six points off the Champions League places, despite signing Jadon Sancho, Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphaël Varane in the summer. Solskjær leaves with a contract that ran until 2024.
