Manchester United have been told that Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton would be an excellent addition for them or Liverpool if he departs Selhurst Park in the summer transfer window. The 22-year-old is among several central midfielders linked with a move to Old Trafford, where two reinforcements in that area are expected.
Midfielder Market Heating Up
Carlos Baleba, Mateus Fernandes, Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Elliot Anderson are just a few other names who could be on the move this summer. Former Premier League striker Clinton Morrison has shared his thoughts on Wharton, outlining the two clubs where he believes the player would thrive.
Speaking to Freebets.com, Morrison said: "Any of the top six [could sign him]. Liverpool or United specifically - he'd go in there and do well. He needs to add more goals and stay fit consistently, but when you join a top club and work with top players, your game evolves naturally."
He added: "Same with England - if he's in a squad with top midfielders, he has to compete and he'll raise his level. I do think he'll probably move in the summer. He deserves it - he's a talent. He's got a good agent. Fantastic footballer, always looking forward."
Transfer Merry-Go-Round
"There'll be a merry-go-round of midfielders this summer with the likes of Andersen and Tonali being linked everywhere, but I think Wharton will be one who goes. You've got to act when the iron's hot," Morrison concluded.
Liverpool are not actively seeking a midfielder, with Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones, and Dominik Szoboszlai as options for Arne Slot. Manchester United, however, are very much in the market for a midfielder and will likely want more goals from Wharton if he signs, given the attacking output they will lose through Casemiro's departure. Wharton has netted eight Premier League goals this season, with 75 per cent assisted by Bruno Fernandes.
United's Midfield Priorities
The Portugal international has been in outstanding form since shifting into a more advanced role, which has also allowed Kobbie Mainoo to return to the starting XI. Manuel Ugarte was fielded in his place against Leeds United earlier this month due to a minor injury, and his performance, along with the lack of midfield cover, has made the club's transfer priority even clearer.
Given the requirement for two midfielders, several names have been linked alongside the Premier League stars already mentioned. This includes Morten Hjulmand of Sporting CP, Stuttgart's Angelo Stiller, and most recently Real Madrid pair Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni.
Manchester City could play a significant role in their rivals potentially landing either of the latter duo, with Real Madrid's interest in Rodri well-documented. The Spain international's return to his homeland could free up either Camavinga or Tchouameni, with the former currently understood to be the midfielder Real are willing to entertain offers for.
