Veteran wide receiver Adam Thielen has parted ways with the Minnesota Vikings, with the team granting his request for release so he can pursue more playing time in the final weeks of his professional career.
A Mutual Decision for a Franchise Legend
The Minnesota Vikings confirmed the surprising move on Monday afternoon, stating the decision came at the 35-year-old player's own request. Thielen, who had contemplated retirement last summer before committing to a 12th NFL season, approached the team through his representatives last week.
Vikings General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah explained the organisation's reasoning in an official statement. "Following discussions through the weekend and out of respect for Adam, we have agreed to give him the opportunity to pursue more playing time elsewhere," Adofo-Mensah said. He emphasised Thielen's legacy, calling him "one of the all-time great Vikings."
Thielen's Emotional Farewell to Minnesota
Shortly after the Vikings' announcement, Thielen posted a heartfelt statement on social media platform X. The Minnesota native described the decision as "tremendously difficult" and not how he imagined his departure.
"This team is in my bones, it's in my heart and it's part of my DNA," Thielen wrote. He confirmed that he had known since spring that the 2025 season would be his last in the National Football League. The receiver expressed profound gratitude to the Wilf family, the front office, and his teammates, assuring fans, "I will ALWAYS be a Minnesota Viking."
Seeking a Final Chapter on the Field
The move follows a season where Thielen's role had diminished significantly. Despite appearing in all 11 of the Vikings' games, his snap count was limited. In the recent game against the Green Bay Packers, he was targeted just once, highlighting his reduced involvement in the offence.
It remains unclear whether Thielen has another team ready to sign him for the remainder of the season. His primary goal is to secure a more substantial role in the closing weeks before he officially retires. The Vikings' action allows him to join any other NFL team immediately as he seeks a fitting finale to a distinguished 12-year career spent almost entirely with his home-state franchise.
