Former England footballer Adam Johnson is now leading a quiet family life in the North East, a full decade after his conviction abruptly ended his professional career. The 38-year-old, who was imprisoned in 2016 after admitting to grooming a 15-year-old girl and engaging in sexual activity, has largely withdrawn from public view since his release from prison. However, sources close to him reveal that he has rebuilt his life alongside his former partner, Stacey Flounders, with whom he is understood to have reconciled in recent years.
Family Focus and Reconciliation
Johnson's aunt, Irene Welsh, recently spoke to the Daily Mail, stating that the couple are now entirely focused on their family life. "Adam is happy and he's been able to rebuild his life after everything he has been through," she said. "He has been back with Stacey for a while now and they concentrate on their children. He keeps himself busy and has a lot of friends."
Friends indicate that the pair gradually reunited following Johnson's release from prison, with the Covid pandemic reportedly playing a role in bringing them back together. They now share two children and are said to enjoy a settled family life away from the public eye.
Stability for the Children
A friend of Stacey Flounders told the Daily Mail that her decision to give Johnson another chance was likely influenced by a desire to provide stability for their children. "He was anxious to make up for lost time with his daughter," the friend explained. "He's a committed dad and that's why they were able to try again."
Johnson, who once earned tens of thousands of pounds per week during his spells at Manchester City and Sunderland, is not believed to be currently employed. He accumulated significant wealth during his football career, which is reportedly sustaining his lifestyle. A relative informed the newspaper that his finances allow the family to maintain a comfortable standard of living without the need for him to secure another job.
Low-Profile Existence and Past Shadows
In recent years, Johnson has been observed locally engaging in everyday activities, such as visiting pubs and spending time with family. Residents describe him as maintaining a low profile. Despite these efforts to move forward, his past continues to attract attention. Johnson remains on the sex offenders register, a consequence of his 2016 sentencing to six years in prison for grooming and sexual activity with a 15-year-old Sunderland supporter. He served half of his sentence before being released on licence in March 2019.
The offence occurred in his Range Rover in January 2015, after he had groomed the victim using social media apps. Stacey Flounders initially stood by Johnson during his court case but ended the relationship when the full nature of his crimes became apparent. She did not believe he was a paedophile, telling the Daily Mail in 2019 that he was a sex addict, though she also called him an "arrogant man" and described his actions as "horrific."
Downsizing and Domestic Tranquility
On her decision to end the relationship at that time, she said: "I knew then that Adam was an arrogant man who had lied and lied. He'd known this girl's age. He'd sent her hundreds of messages. It was horrific." The couple previously lived in a £1.8 million six-bedroom property within a gated community but have since downsized to a more modest £470,000 home, though they still lead a very comfortable life.
A former team-mate described Johnson now as a "typically suburban dad" with a newfound sense of "calm and acceptance." They added that he "has finally been tamed" by Stacey, highlighting the transformative impact of their reconciled relationship on his post-prison life.
