Aaron Ramsey has agreed a surprise transfer to Mexican side Pumas UNAM, ending his brief stint as interim manager of Cardiff City and taking himself out of the running for the permanent role. The 34-year-old Welsh midfielder will become the first high-profile British player to feature in the Mexican league once the move is finalised.
Ramsey was appointed Cardiff interim manager for the final three games of the Championship season after the club sacked Omer Riza, but he could not prevent relegation to the third tier. Despite being the bookmakers' favourite to take the job permanently, Ramsey had made clear his desire to continue playing and lead Wales at the 2026 World Cup.
“There’s a lot to play for and that World Cup is a massive carrot being dangled,” Ramsey said in April. He returned to his boyhood club Cardiff in 2023 but has been hampered by injuries, currently recovering from hamstring surgery.
Pumas, also known as Club Universidad Nacional, finished sixth in the 2024-25 Mexican standings and qualified for the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Cardiff, meanwhile, continue their search for a permanent manager after top target Nathan Jones signed a new contract with Charlton Athletic.
