Police have confirmed that 19 fans have been arrested following the Africa Cup of Nations final, which saw Senegal defeat Morocco 1-0 in extra time. The arrests include 18 Senegal supporters and one Algerian national, according to AFP via RMC Sport. The Senegal fans are being questioned about acts of hooliganism inside the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, while the Algerian is suspected of inciting hooliganism.
The match descended into chaos after Morocco were awarded a controversial penalty in normal time. In protest, several Senegalese players left the pitch and headed to the tunnel, with coach Pape Thiaw urging his team to walk off. They eventually returned, and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy saved Brahim Diaz's panenka penalty, sending the game to extra time. Pape Gueye scored the winner in the fourth minute of extra time.
In the stands, shocking scenes unfolded as Senegal fans attempted to enter the pitch, and a chair was reportedly thrown. FIFA president Gianni Infantino condemned the behaviour of some supporters and Senegalese players and staff, stating: 'It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner, and equally, violence cannot be tolerated in our sport.' He called on CAF's disciplinary bodies to take appropriate measures.
CAF also condemned the inappropriate behaviour, particularly targeting the refereeing team, and said it is reviewing all footage to take action against those found guilty. Senegal coach Pape Thiaw could face a lengthy ban for his role in the protests, and he cancelled his post-match press conference amid boos from Moroccan journalists.
