Manchester United face a crucial decision regarding the future of highly-rated teenager Harry Amass, with his current loan club Sheffield Wednesday locked in talks to extend his stay until the end of the season.
Wednesday Lead the Race Amid Widespread Interest
The 18-year-old left-back's initial spell at Hillsborough is scheduled to conclude after Sunday's Championship fixture against Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road. However, Sheffield Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen confirmed on Friday that discussions are ongoing between the two clubs and the player's representative in an effort to secure an extension.
Amass has been a standout performer for the struggling Owls, making 20 appearances and playing virtually every minute available under Pedersen. His consistent displays even earned him the club's Player of the Month award for November, highlighting his impact.
"There is a dialogue between the clubs and the agent, so I really hope that we can finalise something soon," Pedersen stated. "Of course, we would love to keep him. He has done really, really well. He's 18-years-old, played so many games... how he has played for us, it has been great."
Administration Complications and a Multi-Club Scramble
Wednesday's pursuit is complicated by the club's ongoing administration and a pending takeover. The Yorkshire side is currently operating under a fee restriction ban, meaning they are limited to free agents and loan deals without fees until the end of the January 2027 window.
Pedersen revealed the club is in dialogue with the English Football League to clarify what business they can conduct. "I hope that we get an answer very, very soon, and hopefully we can do some things so we can get some support to the players," he added.
This financial constraint makes retaining Amass on loan a priority, but they face significant competition. The youngster's impressive form in a difficult campaign has not gone unnoticed, triggering what has been described as a '12-club scramble' for his signature this January. Fellow Championship sides Stoke City and Millwall have been specifically named among the suitors keen to lure him away from Hillsborough.
Manchester United's Development Dilemma
The final decision rests with Manchester United, who must weigh the benefits of Amass continuing his development at a club where he is settled and playing regularly against the option of a new challenge elsewhere. Disrupting his momentum mid-season is a key consideration for the Old Trafford hierarchy.
With his current deal expiring imminently, United's resolution on Amass's immediate future is required swiftly. Keeping him at Sheffield Wednesday appears to be the player's preferred outcome, offering stability, but the Red Devils will ultimately determine what is best for his long-term progression amid intense external interest.
