Rodgers slammed by Steelers coach after heated row

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers publicly lost his temper with head coach Mike McCarthy during the first quarter of Thursday Night Football against the Cleveland Browns, and an on-camera outburst sparked a furious reaction.

Rodgers ran out of patience during Pittsburgh's opening drive against the Cleveland Browns and flung both arms into the air in the team huddle while awaiting McCarthy's play call with approximately 22 seconds remaining on the play clock. The 42-year-old quarterback then turned towards the Steelers sideline and appeared to shout, "What the f***, call it!" at his coach as the clock continued to tick down.

Cameras capture explosive exchange

Prime Video's microphones and cameras captured the explosive moment as the Steelers were pushing deep into Cleveland territory. They also picked up McCarthy's immediate response from the sideline.

The Steelers head coach appeared far from willing to accept criticism from his QB without retaliating. McCarthy seemingly responded through his headset by calling Rodgers — who had previously thrown Steelers coaches under the bus following his own humiliating error — a "f***ing ***hole," before the cameras swiftly cut away on two separate occasions.

Steelers respond on the field

Rodgers' exasperation resulted in an incomplete short pass into the ground while searching for Steelers WR Ben Skowronek at Cleveland's 20-yard line. The experienced QB made amends by orchestrating a drive that brought Pittsburgh's opening points of the evening.

Running back Jaylen Warren broke free for a nine-yard run two plays afterwards, and the Steelers capped the 17-play, 78-yard drive with Rodgers connecting with Roman Wilson for a 12-yard touchdown.

History of friction between the duo

Pittsburgh moved into a 7-0 lead, though Cleveland replied with three second-quarter touchdowns to establish a 21-7 lead going into the interval. Running backs Jaleel McLaughlin and Quinshon Judkins both found the endzone, and Deshaun Watson delivered a two-yard passing TD to Harold Fannin Jr.

Rodgers completed nine of his opening 13 attempts for 74 yards, one touchdown and one interception as Cleveland maintained its advantage. The incident was far from the first time Rodgers and McCarthy had experienced a volatile exchange. They previously had a comparable moment in 2013 following a stalled red-zone drive that forced a field goal.

The duo had previously claimed Super Bowl XLV together in Green Bay before their initial partnership ended. They reunited in Pittsburgh this campaign as both seek to rediscover the success of their former glory days in an entirely new team.
