The game had been clouded by days of controversy, with strong protests against the fixture in Ireland led by pressure group Irish Sport for Palestine, which organised a "Stop the Game" campaign amid the UN-defined genocide in Gaza.
Player boycott and vote to play
On Saturday, it became unclear if Ireland would go ahead with the game as goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu revealed he would boycott the match, leading to a tense meeting between the players, management and Irish FA representatives. After a delay to training and the press conference, the governing body revealed the game would go ahead after the team voted in favour of playing, with CEO David Courell claiming a "significant majority" wanted to play.
The Ireland players wore black armbands in solidarity with the Palestinian people, and Moylan made a significant gesture after finding the net. The players also snubbed shaking hands with their Israeli opponents at the Nagyerdei Stadion, and Heimir Hallgrimsson's men bowed their heads during Israel's national anthem.
Dominant display in Hungary
Following first-half goals by Troy Parrott and former Celtic striker Adam Idah, the Cardiff City winger got in on the scoring again during a dominant display. Moylan took off his black armband and kissed it as he wheeled away, then kissed the Ireland crest on his jersey.
