Canelo Alvarez Trainer in PED Advertising Scandal

The boxing world has been jolted by a major doping scandal after it was revealed that a strength and conditioning coach, who worked with superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, had previously advertised performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) on his social media.

The coach, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was hired by Alvarez's team in the lead-up to a recent training camp. An investigation by The Guardian uncovered that prior to this engagement, the individual used his public Instagram profile to promote and offer substances explicitly described as steroids and other banned PEDs to his followers.

A Direct Link to Banned Substances

Evidence shows the now-deleted posts contained unambiguous language, with one video captioned: "Get your hands on this. Message me for details." The substances promoted are all prohibited under the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) code, which governs professional boxing.

While there is no suggestion that the four-weight world champion Alvarez was aware of these activities or involved in any wrongdoing, the association has sent shockwaves through the sport. The fighter's management team has stated they conducted standard due diligence but were unaware of the coach's online history.

Investigation Launched by Anti-Doping Body

In response to the findings, UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) has confirmed it is "looking into the matter." A spokesperson stated, "We take all matters related to the supply of banned substances extremely seriously. We are aware of the reports and are making inquiries."

The case raises serious questions about the vetting process for personnel within elite athletes' inner circles, often referred to as their 'team.' The ease with which an individual promoting PEDs could be employed by the camp of one of the sport's biggest names highlights a potential significant loophole in the fight against doping.

Sport Faces Yet Another Integrity Test

This incident places boxing's integrity under the microscope once again. For a sport frequently battling allegations of PED use, the revelation that a coach with such a public history was able to gain access to a top-tier camp is deeply concerning for fans and clean athletes alike.

The focus now turns to the ongoing investigation and what steps governing bodies will take to prevent such breaches of protocol in the future, ensuring the sanctity of competition is protected.
