England captain Ben Stokes has spoken candidly about the profound disappointment and 'hurt' felt within the squad after their Ashes dreams were emphatically shattered by Australia in a mere 11 days of cricket.

The tourists' 82-run defeat at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday confirmed an unassailable 3-0 lead for the hosts in the five-match series. This marks the fourth consecutive Ashes tour in which England have lost the opening three Tests, despite arriving with renewed optimism under the leadership of Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum.
Stokes admitted the crushing reality of their failed mission was a bitter pill to swallow. 'That dream that we came here with is now over, which is obviously incredibly disappointing,' he stated. 'Everyone is obviously hurting and quite emotional about it.'
Searching for Positives Amid the Pain
Despite the series defeat, Stokes pointed to signs of the fighting spirit he demanded after the second Test. England's attempted chase of a mammoth 435 in the fourth innings showed grit, particularly from the lower order. 'All of the stuff from last week about me wanting to see a bit more from the team, I can definitely say I saw that this week,' Stokes reflected.
He praised the resistance shown by Jamie Smith and Will Jacks on the final morning, suggesting a famous 'heist' had seemed possible. 'We've showed it in passages in this first three games, and this week I thought we did incredibly well to take it to where we did,' he added.

'We've got two more games to go and that's where the focus needs to switch to now,' he said. 'We're not going to stop... We aren't just going to fall over and let this series play out. We're going to give absolutely everything.'
