Nottinghamshire defeated Surrey by 20 runs in a dramatic County Championship clash at the Oval, moving 14 points clear at the top of Division One with one match remaining. Josh Tongue was the hero, taking five wickets as Surrey, chasing 315, were bowled out for 294. It was Surrey's first defeat of the season and Notts' first win at the Oval since 2008.
Surrey captain Ollie Pope made 41, but a brilliant piece of captaincy from Haseeb Hameed, who brought on Liam Patterson-White for one over, saw Tom Curran stumped for 33. Dan Lawrence fell for 50, and despite Tom Lawes' counter-attack, Tongue's venomous spell from the pavilion end sealed the win. 'I don't think I have ever played in a Championship match as good as that,' said Tongue.
Glamorgan secured promotion to Division One for the first time in 20 years after their match against Derbyshire ended in a draw. They join Leicestershire, who were crowned Division Two champions with a game to spare. Somerset's title hopes ended as they could not bowl out Hampshire, despite six wickets for Archie Vaughan, the match ending in a draw.
Yorkshire batted out a draw at Hove and will face a relegation decider against Durham. Worcestershire, after their loss, will be relegated to Division Two. Nottinghamshire now host Warwickshire at Trent Bridge, while Surrey travel to Hampshire in the final round of matches.
