Trump's Awkward Presence at World Cup Trophy Lift
Donald Trump created a "really awkward" moment during the World Cup final, according to body language expert Darren Stanton. The US President was present at the trophy lift and medal ceremony, but his attempts to be center stage were met with reluctance from players.
Speaking to OLBG, Stanton analyzed Trump's behavior: "It's another example of Donald Trump trying to be number one, thinking he's the center of attention, that everyone's there just for him. And he just doesn't take the hint."
Players Dismiss Trump's Attempts at Engagement
Stanton noted that both Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal appeared reluctant to interact with Trump. "With Lionel Messi, he doesn't look like he wants to hang around. Trump wants to engage him, but Messi's body language immediately turns to the right and he starts to walk off. Trump taps him on the back, but there's a reluctance."
Similarly, Yamal had a much shorter interaction with Trump compared to others. "He has a much longer handshake with other people, but with Trump it was literally one shake, then he was off. It reminds me of going through a drive-through and not stopping."
Trump Oblivious to Social Cues
During the trophy lift, Trump initially stood in the center of the shot. Players gestured for him to move aside, but he failed to register the hint. "He doesn't smell the coffee," Stanton said. "He just stands there like a third wheel while the team raises the trophy. Eventually he puts his hands in the air and walks off, but it's hilarious that he just doesn't consciously register that people want to crack on."
Stanton concluded that Trump seemed oblivious to the dismissive attitude. "He's thinking 'I'm the president, they're all going to be over the moon,' but people are not really that impressed."
