Ricky Hatton, the beloved former two-weight world champion, was laid to rest in Manchester on [date], with thousands of mourners lining the streets to pay their respects. The funeral procession began at the Cheshire Cheese pub, Hatton's local, led by a Reliant Robin van from the sitcom Only Fools and Horses, a nod to his well-known love for the show.
Hatton's son Campbell, a former professional boxer himself, delivered an emotional tribute at the service, saying: "I can't explain how much I'm going to miss you, dad, and that we won't be making any new memories - but the ones we did I will cherish for ever." The cortege passed Hatton's gym and the AO Arena, where he defeated Kostya Tszyu 20 years ago to win his first world title.
Among the attendees at Manchester Cathedral were Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher, boxing figures Tyson Fury, Tony Bellew, and Frank Bruno, as well as cricketer Andrew Flintoff and footballer Wayne Rooney. Hatton's mother Carol described him as "the People's Champion" in a statement read on her behalf.
Hatton, who died at 46 on 14 September, was remembered for his all-action style and down-to-earth personality. He was a dedicated mental health advocate and a trainer after his retirement. A private memorial service was followed by a march to the Etihad Stadium, home of his beloved Manchester City.
