Former world champion boxer Ricky Hatton died from hanging, an inquest at South Manchester Coroners' Court in Stockport heard on Friday. The 46-year-old was found dead at his home in Hyde, Tameside, on 14 September 2025 by his manager, Paul Speak, who had arrived to take him to Manchester Airport for a flight to Dubai.
Pathologist Dr Neil Papworth stated in a report read to the court that injuries were 'consistent with hanging' and there was 'no evidence to suggest suspicious circumstances'. Analysis of Hatton's brain revealed 'chronic neuronal loss' and evidence of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) at the 'milder end of the spectrum', likely due to repeated blows to the head during his boxing career.
Hatton's mother, Carol, gave evidence via a statement, recalling their last meeting two days before his death. She described his 'eyes were sad' as they discussed his return to the ring and selling his house. The inquest also heard Hatton was concerned about his finances and planned to discuss them with his father upon returning from Dubai.
Toxicology reports showed Hatton had 212mg of ethanol per decilitre of blood and 253mg per decilitre of urine, consistent with alcohol intoxication. The level was twice the legal drink-drive limit, and it was considered 'likely' alcohol was still being absorbed at the time of death.
