Pacquiao Asserts Contract Clarity as He Takes Over Mayweather's Former Gym
Manny Pacquiao is making a bold statement in the boxing world by taking over Floyd Mayweather's former gym in Hollywood, rebranding it as Pacquiao Prime Boxing. This move comes amid escalating tensions between the two legendary fighters as they prepare for a highly anticipated rematch scheduled for September 19 at the Sphere in Las Vegas. The timing of the gym acquisition adds a symbolic layer to the rivalry, with Pacquiao pointing out that a large image of Mayweather in the space will soon be removed.
Contract Dispute Intensifies Ahead of Rematch
Behind the scenes, the focus has shifted from promotional details to a contract dispute that threatens to overshadow the bout. Pacquiao, 47, insists that the agreement signed for the September fight is for a professional match, not an exhibition as Mayweather has described. In an interview with The Associated Press, Pacquiao emphasized principles of dignity and integrity, stating, "He knows what he signed." Representatives for Mayweather, 49, who retired nine years ago, did not respond to requests for comment.
Jas Mathur, CEO of Manny Pacquiao Promotions and a producer on the event, revealed that Mayweather signed three separate agreements outlining a professional fight with financial commitments already in motion. Mathur described the situation as a breach of contract, noting that Mayweather took an advance on his purse. "Everything is black and white," Mathur said, adding that the matter is now being handled through legal channels. He warned of consequences if the terms are not honored.
Pacquiao's Focus on Legacy and Future Ventures
When asked about the potential fallout if the fight does not proceed as planned, Mathur did not hold back, calling Mayweather "a chicken." Pacquiao responded with a playful imitation, flapping his arms and making chicken sounds, drawing laughter. Beyond the immediate stakes, Pacquiao addressed his legacy, humbly stating he does not claim to be the greatest but lets the people decide. He is the only fighter to win titles across four decades.
The new gym, set to open this summer, will operate as a private training center for professional fighters, athletes, and select guests, with plans to expand across major markets. Mathur highlighted the location's visibility in Hollywood as a key factor, suggesting it represents a shift from Mayweather's previous business approach. Pacquiao aims to create opportunities for the next generation of fighters, saying, "This is our passion to build more boxing gyms and help develop fighters."
Building a Broader Business Empire
Pacquiao's vision extends beyond the ring, with efforts to grow his business footprint from Asia into the United States and globally. Ventures include Manny Pay, a digital wallet platform, along with media and consumer products tied to his brand. Mathur described a long-term strategy focused on fighter development and expansion, with Pacquiao actively involved in all aspects. When asked what drives him now, Pacquiao said, "Both. We're focused on this fight, and building our own businesses."
As the rematch date approaches, Pacquiao remains steadfast in his preparation and commitment to the signed agreements, ensuring that the bout proceeds with clarity and honor.
