Conor McGregor has confirmed he intends to fight again in the UFC, despite his return to the octagon lasting just 69 seconds before he suffered a leg injury that will require surgery. The Irishman took to Instagram on Monday to outline his recovery plan, stating: “Surgery. Prehab. Return to martial arts practice. Go again. Final fight of the contract. Praise God!”
McGregor was attempting a comeback fight on Saturday in Las Vegas but suffered an apparent knee injury seconds into the first round of a loss to Max Holloway. He did not disclose the exact nature of the injury or provide a timeline for his potential return. In a social media post after the fight, McGregor insisted he was healthy heading into the bout, writing: “My head gasket is gone. Destroyed. I had no injury / injuries going into the fight. This came out of nowhere. I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell.”
With one fight remaining on his UFC contract, the 38-year-old’s future with the organisation remains uncertain. However, UFC appears willing to support another comeback, with CEO Dana White indicating he was already considering potential opponents. White said he had “five ideas” for McGregor’s next fight had he beaten Holloway, and is mulling over scheduling options.
McGregor has a history of serious injuries, including a torn ACL in 2013 (also against Holloway) and a broken leg in a 2021 loss to Dustin Poirier. His last UFC victory was a 40-second win over Donald Cerrone in January 2020. Away from the octagon, he has been involved in multiple lawsuits and aligned with hard-right figures during an aborted run for the Irish presidency.
