Anthony Joshua has no plans to retire from boxing, contrary to claims made by a man purporting to be his uncle. The 36-year-old British heavyweight is still recovering from a tragic car accident in Nigeria that killed his personal trainer Latif Ayodele and strength coach Sina Ghami.
The crash occurred when the SUV they were travelling in collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Ogun State. Joshua sustained minor injuries and was released from hospital, but the full extent of his injuries remains unclear.
Before the accident, Joshua had knocked out former YouTuber Jake Paul in Miami and called out long-term rival Tyson Fury, raising hopes of a long-awaited fight between the two former world heavyweight champions. However, a man claiming to be his uncle told The Punch that Joshua had retired, citing the emotional toll of his fights on the family.
Despite these claims, sources close to Joshua have stated he has made no decision on his boxing career. He has not publicly commented on the crash or his future plans. The driver of the vehicle has since been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and other offences.
Joshua had been scheduled to fight in Saudi Arabia on Valentine's Day, with a potential bout against Fury in September also mooted. His camp has requested privacy as they mourn the loss of Ayodele and Ghami, who were described as close friends and integral members of his team.
