Anthony Joshua has no plans to retire from boxing following a devastating car crash in Nigeria that killed two of his close friends, according to reports. The former two-time heavyweight world champion was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that struck a stationary lorry on an expressway near Lagos last week.
The accident claimed the lives of Sina Ghami and Latif 'Latz' Ayodele. Their funeral services were held at a London mosque on Sunday, with Joshua attending and posting on Instagram: 'My Brothers Keeper.' Despite a man claiming to be Joshua's uncle stating the boxer would retire, the Mirror reports no such decision has been made.
Adedamola Joshua had told The Punch: 'The major thing there is that he has retired from boxing... Now that he has said that he's leaving while the ovation is highest, we are happy.' However, Joshua's camp has not confirmed this, and he is expected to continue his career.
The driver of the car, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and other offences. He was granted bail of five million naira ($3,480) and remanded pending meeting conditions. Joshua spent several days in hospital before being discharged on New Year's Eve and returning to the UK on Friday.
Joshua had been in Nigeria after his sixth-round knockout of Jake Paul in December. He has spoken of a potential mega-fight with Tyson Fury in 2026, with promoter Frank Warren confirming talks for a late summer showdown. Fury has announced his own retirement but Warren says a fight is being looked at.
