Nigerian police have charged the driver of British boxer Anthony Joshua with causing death by dangerous driving following a fatal car crash that killed two people on 29 December. Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, appeared in court on charges including driving without a valid licence and driving without due care and attention, causing bodily harm and damage to property. He is due to appear in court again on 20 January.
The crash occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in south-west Nigeria when the Lexus SUV, driven by Kayode, suffered a burst tyre while overtaking and collided with a stationary lorry illegally parked on the hard shoulder. Joshua's personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength coach, Sina Ghami, both 36, died at the scene. Joshua and Kayode sustained minor injuries.
The Federal Road Safety Corps stated that the vehicle was travelling beyond the legal speed limit. Kayode, a longstanding member of Joshua's team, was granted bail of 5 million naira (£2,580) but remains in custody until conditions are met. Joshua was taken to a medical facility in Lagos and later discharged after assessments confirmed he was stable.
The accident came 10 days after Joshua's victory over YouTuber Jake Paul in the US. He was reportedly preparing for a return to the ring early this year. Joshua and his mother paid respects to the deceased at a funeral home following the crash.
