The incident occurred on Monday, 3 January 2026, near Lagos. According to reports, Joshua had initially taken the front passenger seat for the journey. However, the driver requested he move to the back, reportedly because Joshua's size was obstructing the view of the wing mirror.
This last-minute change of seating is believed to have been a crucial twist of fate. The two friends who subsequently occupied the front seats, Latif and another unnamed individual, lost their lives in the collision. Joshua was taken to a local hospital with what were described as minor injuries.

The driver of the vehicle has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving. His lawyer, Olalekan Abiodun, stated that his client has pleaded not guilty, suggesting a potential brake failure as a cause. "I know he is saying the brakes did not work," Abiodun told the Daily Mail.
After receiving initial treatment in Nigeria, Joshua flew back to England. He landed at London Stansted Airport on Friday night and was taken directly to his home to continue his recuperation away from the public eye.
