South Africa investigate Bongi Mbonambi over misconduct

South Africa have launched an investigation into Springboks hooker Bongi Mbonambi, with his future at the Sharks reportedly hanging in the balance following alleged misconduct during a team-building trip.

The double World Cup-winning forward is at the centre of an internal disciplinary process at the Durban-based franchise after an alleged breach of team protocols, according to reports in South Africa.

Alleged breach during team-building trip

Afrikaans newspaper Rapport reports that Mbonambi is facing potential disciplinary action over an incident during a pre-season team-building exercise at Bayala Private Safari Lodges.

The allegations relate to claims that players continued socialising into the early hours despite instructions from the coaching staff about the team's preparations for a return to full training.

Mbonambi's future at the Sharks is now in doubt, with the franchise reportedly considering terminating his contract if he is found guilty of the alleged misconduct.

Absent from training and matchday squads

The hooker has been absent from training and matchday squads despite reportedly being fit, while Sharks head coach JP Pietersen has declined to comment on his situation when questioned by the media.

The reports suggest Mbonambi's position is particularly precarious because he was allegedly present at a team meeting in which Pietersen outlined the expectations for players during the team-building trip.

Players were reportedly permitted to socialise on the Tuesday evening but were expected to focus on their return to training afterwards. Mbonambi is alleged to have breached those instructions, with his status as one of the squad's senior players said to be a factor in the situation.

Senior players under scrutiny

The expectation on experienced players to set an example for their team-mates is understood to have added to the seriousness of the matter.

Another senior Springbok, Trevor Nyakane, was also reportedly involved in a breach of protocols. However, Rapport suggests he could avoid more serious punishment because he was not present at the meeting in which Pietersen set out the team's expectations.

The Sharks are expected to determine the outcome of their disciplinary process, with Mbonambi's future at the franchise dependent on the findings.

A source told IOL: “Out of respect for the disciplinary process, the Sharks decline to comment.”

Springboks future also in doubt

The situation could have implications beyond Mbonambi's domestic career, with the veteran hooker also facing a challenge to regain his place in the Springboks squad.

The 35-year-old, who has 82 caps to his name, has been a key figure for South Africa over recent years, helping the Springboks win the Rugby World Cup in both 2019 and 2023.

However, injuries have disrupted his involvement over the past year, leaving him with work to do to force his way back into the international picture.

With South Africa preparing for the November Test window, the latest developments could further complicate his hopes of returning to the national set-up.
