English artistic gymnast Shanna-Kae Grant was left looking confused just before her Commonwealth Games routine after organisers played the wrong music. The 22-year-old got into her starting position for her floor routine but rose to her feet when the music started playing.
Music blunder at Commonwealth Games
England were competing in the team competition, with tension building as they looked to beat fellow home nation Wales to grab the bronze medal. The floor was their last rotation, and the mistake only added to the tension.
As the incident unfolded live on TNT Sport, former English gymnast and co-commentator Beth Tweddle said: “Unfortunately, they’ve played the wrong music. You get taught as a gymnast to just step off the floor. So, they’ll be making sure that they get her correct music on.”
The mistake was rectified, and Grant was able to complete her routine. She was followed by Abigail Martin, who knew she needed a score better than 12.350 to secure a place on the podium. Martin recorded a score of 13.250, securing the medal for Team England with a final score of 154.300, behind Australia (158.400) and Canada (157.300).
Last-minute call-up and medal joy
Grant was a late call-up to Team England for the Commonwealth Games. On Thursday, she was a non-travelling reserve for the team before her call. Responding to the call, she told the Team England social accounts: “So when I got the call to notify me that I had to come up to Scotland, everything was so last-minute. I was so overwhelmed, literally threw everything into a suitcase, asked my lash lady if she could fit me in, like five minutes before I knew and before I had to go to Scotland. I’m most excited for the team final, again just going out there showing what I can do and having fun and soaking in the experience.”
Taking to Instagram after earning the bronze medal, she wrote: “COMMONWEALTH GAMES BRONZE MEDALISTS. I am so proud of this team and had the most unbelievable experience out there…memories for a lifetime. Honestly can’t thank everyone enough for all the support and the lovely messages.”
