Sha'Carri Richardson stormed to the world 100m title in Budapest, setting a new World Championships record of 10.65 seconds. The American sprinter finished ahead of Shericka Jackson and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, while Great Britain's Dina Asher-Smith could only manage eighth place with a time of 11 seconds.
Asher-Smith struggled in her semi-final, running 11.02 seconds to finish third and needing a fastest-loser spot to advance. There was further disappointment for team-mate Daryll Neita, who failed to reach the final after running 11.03 seconds in her semi-final. Neita expressed her frustration, saying, 'It's a big surprise because I should be there. The fact that I am not is super disappointing.'
In the pole vault, Holly Bradshaw failed to reach the final after clearing only 4.35m, following illness at Great Britain's holding camp. The 31-year-old tearfully admitted, 'My mental health is really suffering from doing this sport right now.' However, Molly Caudery qualified for the final after clearing 4.65m.
Jessie Knight provided a bright spot for Great Britain, winning her 400m hurdles heat in 54.27 seconds to reach Tuesday's final. She said, 'It is probably the best mentally and physically that I have ever been coming into any Championships.'
