Scottie Scheffler surprised his wife, Meredith, and his manager by heading straight to the bar after winning the Tour Championship. The World No. 1 secured the title by three shots, claiming his second career FedEx Cup and surpassing Tiger Woods in PGA Tour career earnings with over $130 million (£102.4m).
Celebration at the Clubhouse
Along with his third title of the season and likely player of the year honors, Scheffler treated himself to an alcoholic drink in the clubhouse before speaking with the press. "I had a beer for the first time in a long time," said Scheffler.
"It just sounded good. The moment came as Scheffler lost an enormous amount of money from his FedEx Cup win paycheck," reports the Mirror US. "Right when we got off the course, I got in there, these guys are trying to get me to do media and all this stuff. I was like how much time do we really have? They're like we've got a couple minutes. All right, let me go inside and get some air conditioning. There was an open bar inside, and I'm like, all right, I'm grabbing a beer. It tasted great."
Historic Earnings and Season Highlights
Scheffler felt that breaking a century-long record held by Woods and pocketing $10 million (£7.9m) in four days of competition warranted a beer. "I don't really drink very often," said Scheffler. "My wife and my manager were like, 'Wow, I haven't seen you have a beer in a long time.' Well, season's over now. I'm going to have a beer. Well-earned beer."
The season has officially ended, with Scheffler etching his name into history at East Lake, boasting three trophies and five runner-up finishes this season. Two of his titles were clinched in the final three weeks of play during the FedEx Cup playoffs.
Reflections on the Battle
"I think just playing tournament golf, I think is a battle as a whole," Scheffler shared. "I think that's part of why I love it too. I get to play against the course, myself. You have to learn how to handle your emotions, handle pressure, not take days off. That's something I'm very proud of."
