Liverpool are in talks with Valencia over a loan move for Harvey Elliott before Tuesday's transfer deadline. The La Liga side lead the chase for the 23-year-old ahead of the 11pm deadline on September 1, having shown interest throughout the summer window.
Elliott in talks with Valencia boss
Elliott is believed to have spoken to Valencia head coach Carlos Corberan about his potential role at Mestalla. A loan deal could lead to a Liverpool contract extension to retain the former England Under-21 star's value, with his current terms expiring in the summer of 2028.
Elliott is yet to feature in a match-day squad under Andoni Iraola and spent most of last season on loan at Aston Villa, where he barely featured. An appearance at the end of a 3-2 win for Liverpool at Newcastle 12 months ago meant the attacking midfielder was unable to move clubs again in the January window.
Villa loan and Europa League glory
Villa were determined to ensure Elliott didn't reach the 10-game milestone that would have triggered an obligation to buy. While the campaign ended in Europa League glory at Villa Park, the former England Under-21 international remained a fringe player throughout, with the Midlanders unwilling to give him the appearances that would have led to a permanent £35m deal.
After returning to the Liverpool fold for the pre-season tour of the United States, Elliott conceded in New York that he was unsure what the future held under new head coach Iraola.
“I think I need to be more kind of cautious of my decisions,” he said after a 1-0 win over Wrexham on July 30. “Ultimately, I'm still wanting to be selfish, within that aspect of doing what's right for me, and whether I'm staying here and fighting for my place, or whether that's potentially going elsewhere, I'm still unsure at this moment in time until I get some more intel.”
Direct talks underway
The Reds had been braced for contact from Valencia prior to the weekend, and the Spanish outfit are now in direct talks over a loan agreement. Elliott signed for his boyhood club in the summer of 2019 from Fulham and has made 149 appearances.
