Firefighters from the North East will participate in an event to remember those who lost their lives on 9/11. A group of emergency services personnel, including firefighters from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS), will take on the Tunnel to Towers run and walk in New York in September this year.

The annual 5K event traces the final steps of New York City Fire Department (FDNY) firefighter Stephen Siller, who ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to reach the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The 34-year-old gave up his life to save others. It will be the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks this year. The run, organised by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, is set to take place on Sunday, September 27.
Participant perspective
Jamie Smith, watch manager for High Handenhold Fire Station near Chester-le-Street, is one of those taking part. The 36-year-old said: "For many of us, this is far more than a journey or a challenge. It is an opportunity to honour the courage, sacrifice, and selflessness of the first responders and all those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Running and walking the same route taken by Firefighter Stephen Siller is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary acts of service carried out in the face of unimaginable adversity."

In 2026, our largest group yet, with 26 colleagues from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS), London Fire Brigade (LFB), East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, the NHS and Durham Constabulary standing together in New York."

Fundraising
The event aims to raise money for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation in America. However, the CDDFRS team will be raising funds for The Fire Fighters Charity. The charity provides care and wellbeing support to members of the UK's fire services and their families. A Just Giving page has been set up by the group taking part in the run.
