Max Burgin Withdraws From Commonwealth Games With DVT

Team England's 800m medal hope Max Burgin has withdrawn from the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games after failing to recover from a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) diagnosis.

Burgin, who entered the World Athletics Championships as the fastest man over 800m this year, pulled out of his heat with what was initially thought to be a calf injury. It later transpired to be DVT.

On Monday morning, Burgin announced he would not be fit to compete. “It’s gutting to have now missed out on two major champs over a medical issue that came out of nowhere,” he said. “This DVT is something that can be fixed easily and relatively quickly. I’m aiming and looking forward to representing my country again soon.”
