Tributes have been paid to Kory Russell, a runner who collapsed and died after finishing the Royal Parks Half Marathon in London on Sunday, October 12. The 25-year-old fell at the finish line in Hyde Park and received immediate medical treatment before being taken to hospital, where he later died.
Kory's mother, Rhi, described him as “the kindest, most loving and hard-working person you could ever meet.” She said: “He gave everything his all, whether it was work, sport, family or friendships. He had such a big heart and a personality that would light up any room.” The family said their world has been “thrown into chaos” and that Kory will be “forever missed and remembered with endless love.”
A spokesperson for the Royal Parks Half Marathon expressed “deep sadness” and confirmed that Kory collapsed at the finish line. They added: “Everyone involved in the organisation of the Royal Parks Half Marathon would like to express sincere condolences to Kory’s family and friends. The family has requested privacy, and no further details will be released in accordance with their wishes. The cause of death will be established later through a post-mortem.”
State Street Investment Management, where Kory worked, said he was a “highly valued and respected member” of the team. City of Cardiff Swimming Club, where Kory and his sister Seren were former swimmers, also paid tribute, stating that Kory suffered a cardiac arrest just 100 metres from the finish line. The club said: “Kory brought a warm smile to every session, and his politeness, respect, and positive spirit left a lasting impression. He will always be remembered as a Cardiff Dragon.”
