Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson will skip the 2026 Commonwealth Games due to a congested major championship schedule. The 800m runner explained that taking part in Glasgow alongside her primary summer targets at the World Championships and European Athletics Championships in Birmingham would place an unmanageable physical strain on her body.
Tight scheduling with Birmingham Europeans
A primary factor in her decision is that the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham begin a mere eight days after the Commonwealth Games conclude in Scotland. Hodgkinson stated that managing multiple back-to-back major championships within such a compressed timeframe is simply too demanding for her racing calendar.
Prioritising long-term injury prevention
Having previously dealt with minor physical niggles, including hamstring tightness and training bumps during her career, the Olympic champion is taking a cautious approach to safeguard her body. She and her coaching team determined that over-racing during a congested summer campaign poses an unnecessary risk to her long-term health, physical fitness and upcoming global title defences.
Lessons learned from past
After securing a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Hodgkinson is fully aware of the intense physical toll that competing in successive major international tournaments takes on an elite runner. Reflecting on her previous experiences with crowded summer schedules, she explained that managing multiple championships in one year is extremely demanding and required her to decide which event best suited her overall goals.
Protecting her elite track momentum
Coming off an incredible indoor campaign where she set a personal best in the four hundred metres and broke the world indoor eight hundred metre record, Hodgkinson wants to keep her structured training blocks completely uninterrupted. Skipping the Commonwealth Games allows her to maintain an optimal periodisation strategy designed specifically to peak at the European and World competitions later in the outdoor season.
