Teenage sprint sensation Gout Gout has declared his confidence is growing as he enters a new phase of his career, having finished school and become a full-time athlete. Speaking at his first formal press conference in Melbourne on Thursday, the 18-year-old said he felt more relaxed than ever ahead of Saturday's Maurie Plant Meet.
Gout will renew his rivalry with Lachlan Kennedy in the 200m, a rematch of last year's race where he was upstaged. Despite the defeat, Gout described the rivalry as 'amazing' and said he was confident of performing well. 'Knowing there's so many people here to watch you run and watch you compete, well, it just brings out the best in you,' he said.
The Queenslander, who reached the 200m semi-finals at last year's World Athletics Championships, said his training had become more professional since leaving school. 'I can train a lot more efficiently, and get a lot more reps and get in the gym a bit more,' he said, adding that his jewellery – including gold chains – was 'something bling'.
Gout acknowledged there were now more expectations on him but said he loved running and would keep an open mindset. He confirmed he would not contest the senior 100m at next month's national championships, instead focusing on defending his 200m Australian title and competing in the under-20 100m.
His main focus this year is the world junior titles in Oregon in August, with plans to run 'a few' Diamond League meets in Europe and other continental gold meets.
