A Cambridge University professor has revealed a straightforward trick to cool down your vehicle in under a minute — and it does not require using the air conditioning. During the current extreme temperatures, cars can become significantly heated, particularly if left in direct sunlight.
It can be exasperating and utterly intolerable to discover your vehicle in such a condition. Fortunately, Hannah Fry has provided a straightforward method to address this.
The Fluid Dynamics Trick
In footage posted with her more than two million Instagram followers, the mathematics professor said: "You know that thing when you get into your car in the summer and it's absolutely boiling hot?"
"There's actually a fluids dynamic trick that you can use to quickly cool your car down [and it] is the trick I continue to use. Don't bother putting on the aircon, that'll take about five minutes, it's not worth it.
"Instead, open the back window on the opposite side [of the driver's seat]. Then what you do is you very quickly open and close the driver's door [repeatedly]."
How It Works
Hannah explained that by rapidly opening and closing the door, it sweeps out the heated air from inside the vehicle. She added: "That sets up something called bulk flow, which is where all of the hot, sweaty, horrible air inside the car is drawn outwards. And the only way to refill it is with nice, fresh, easy air from [the open back window]."
"It only takes about two or three goes and suddenly it's absolutely beautifully temperate."
Additional Tips
It may also be worth considering draping blankets over your seats while the car is unoccupied. Although this might appear counterproductive, it is the blanket that will absorb the heat rather than the seat itself — simply toss them into the boot before setting off.
