Welsh cyclist Finlay Tarling has died at the age of 19 following a severe accident during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal. The rider, from Ceredigion, was competing for the NSN Development Team on the 166.8km stage from Melgaço to Fafe when the incident occurred.
Organisers halted the event while emergency services attended the scene. Tarling had represented Great Britain in both road and track disciplines and was the younger brother of Josh Tarling, the Welsh Ineos Grenadiers rider regarded as one of the sport's most exciting young prospects.
Team statement and tributes
In a statement, NSN said: "We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Finlay Tarling at the Volta a Portugal today." The team added: "Fin was a much loved member of our team but most importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many. He will be deeply missed."
The statement continued: "Our deepest condolences go out to Fin's parents Michael and Dawn, his brother Josh, and everyone who was lucky enough to call Fin a friend."
Race suspended after accident
Race organisers, alongside the Portuguese Cycling Federation, conveyed their "most heartfelt condolences to the family of Finlay Tarling, to his team-mates, to the NSN Development Team, and to all his friends and loved ones". They confirmed the race had been suspended and the planned podium ceremony cancelled out of "respect and mourning".
Officials revealed via social media that Tarling died after a "serious accident". Portuguese broadcaster RTP, covering the event, reported he was struck by a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction which was not associated with the competition.
Tarling had signed with the NSN Development Team for the 2026 season following a stint with the Israel-Premier Tech Academy. The siblings were raised in Ffos-y-ffin, Ceredigion, where both developed their cycling ambitions from an early age.
