Freya MacLean, a 19-year-old dancer and primary education student at Glasgow University, died in a tragic accident at the Falls of Falloch near Stirling. Emergency services responded to reports of a woman in difficulty in the water at around 10:45 p.m. on Friday, and her body was discovered at approximately 11:45 a.m. on Saturday.
Family Tribute
Her parents, Samantha and Ruaraidh, paid tribute to their daughter, saying she was 'beloved by family, friends and the wider community' and described her as 'a truly beautiful soul whose kindness knew no bounds.' They added: 'Her warm smile, infectious laughter and caring heart brought comfort and joy to everyone she met. Always generous with her time, she was the friend people turned to, offering unwavering support, encouragement and compassion.'
They noted that her personality 'lit up every room' and that her 'legacy of kindness and love will live on forever.' The family asked the public to respect their privacy during this difficult time.
Police Investigation
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'The death is being treated as unexplained, but there are no apparent suspicious circumstances.'
Fundraising Campaign
Following her death, JC Dance and Cheer Academy launched a GoFundMe page to help cover unexpected costs for the family. Organisers Charlene McDonald and Laura-Jane Gelston wrote: 'As you may have heard, we have tragically lost our beautiful Glitter Girl Freya in a tragic accident.' They described her as 'truly special' with an 'infectious personality' and a 'heart full of kindness.' The campaign has raised just under £2,000 so far.
Water Safety Campaign
The Mirror has launched the 'Save Lives For Sam' water safety campaign to address the UK's growing drowning crisis. The campaign calls for compulsory water safety lessons in schools, a nationwide public awareness campaign, better lifesaving equipment at high-risk waterways, the introduction of Sam's Law, and a dedicated Minister for Water Safety.
