Kenzo Kies dies aged 21 in drowning accident

Former Lyon and Saint-Etienne striker Kenzo Kies has died at the age of 21 after a drowning incident in the Rhone River. The accident occurred on June 22 as temperatures soared to 40C in France. Kies was declared brain-dead following the incident.

Drowning in the Rhone River

Kies was swimming near the Parc de la Feyssine, between Villeurbanne and Caluire-et-Cuire, an area where swimming is strictly prohibited. According to local reports, a powerful current dragged four individuals underwater, including Kies. Emergency services arrived at approximately 5:30pm. Two people were pulled to safety without needing medical treatment, and a third was revived and taken to hospital in stable condition. Divers recovered Kies from the river, but attempts to resuscitate him failed.

Football Career and Tributes

Kies began his career at Lyon's youth academy before moving to Saint-Etienne. He left Saint-Etienne when his contract expired last summer and joined Ligue 2 side Guingamp, playing for their reserve team. Saint-Etienne confirmed his death on X, stating: "The Green Generation is in mourning. A resident of the Robert-Herbin Sports Center for seven years, a talented player and discreet young man appreciated by all, Kenzo Kies has lost his life in dramatic circumstances." The club added: "AS Saint-Etienne extends its most sincere condolences to his loved ones... Kenzo, in the corridors of L'Étrat, no one will ever forget you."
