Bristol's 'Coolest City' Myth Masks Deprivation, Says Resident
Bristol's 'Coolest City' Myth Masks Deprivation Problems

A letter from Jane Ghosh, a native and resident of Bristol, challenges the persistent myth that the city is the UK's coolest. She argues that this image, perpetuated by privileged alumni of Bristol University who rarely left the affluent area of Clifton, masks serious deprivation problems.

Deprivation and Inequality

Ghosh points out that Bristol has several of the most deprived communities in the UK, a massive inequality problem, and the largest homelessness and van-dweller issue outside London. Additionally, the city struggles with litter and fly-tipping.

Public Transport Woes

She also criticizes the lack of decent public transport, noting that only expensive buses are available, leading to daily gridlocked roads.

Ghosh calls for a change in the narrative so that the city can receive government input to improve what she describes as a two-tier city.
