Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the wife of California Governor Gavin Newsom, has become a focal point of conservative criticism as her husband emerges as an early frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination. Conservative media and influencers have been resurfacing old footage of the documentary filmmaker, portraying her as out of touch and elitist.
Kyle Tharp, a progressive writer, noted in early April that selectively edited clips of Siebel Newsom were spreading rapidly across right-wing media, including on platforms like Megyn Kelly's show and social media posts by Donald Trump Jr. The clips often feature her discussing gender stereotypes or speaking about personal tragedies, and have been met with mocking commentary.
Democratic strategist Mike Nellis argues that the attacks are a deliberate effort by Republicans to find a new line of attack against Gavin Newsom, avoiding issues like the economy and the war in Iran. 'Going after [Siebel Newsom] is just an extension of them running out of shit to talk about with Gavin,' Nellis said.
Conservatives have targeted Siebel Newsom's work as a filmmaker focusing on masculinity and media portrayals of women, as well as her choice to use the title 'first partner' and her advocacy for equal pay. Debbie Walsh of the Center for American Women and Politics noted that political spouses are increasingly scrutinised, but Siebel Newsom's outspokenness makes her a particular target.
Walsh added that social media amplifies these attacks, allowing clips to be taken out of context and spread widely. The governor's office did not respond to requests for comment.
