A progressive media organization has launched a significant new campus initiative explicitly designed to counter the influence of the prominent conservative youth group Turning Point USA, with the strategic aim of winning back younger voters. According to a detailed report, More Perfect Union announced its More Perfect University program on Wednesday, framing it as a direct competitor to the conservative activist network.
A Progressive Counterweight Emerges
Josh Miller-Lewis, the co-founder and editor in chief of More Perfect Union, publicly declared the launch on social media, stating, "Excited to announce the launch of More Perfect University today. It's past time for Turning Point to have some competition on college campuses." This statement underscores the initiative's foundational purpose: to provide a progressive alternative on campuses where Turning Point USA has established a substantial presence.
Building a Digital and Physical Community
The More Perfect University program plans a dual approach, hosting in-person campus events while simultaneously constructing a robust digital community. According to its official website, this platform will allow students to collaborate, attend virtual events and training sessions, and connect with experienced organizers. The initiative also promises to offer specialized training for students to develop skills in local storytelling, aiming to challenge unchecked power and inspire activism beyond individual campuses.
The website articulates its mission clearly: "[More Perfect University] connects you with students everywhere and equips you with the tools you need to unrig our broken economic system." This focus on economic populism is central to its appeal.
Targeting the Youth Vote
A core objective of this new campus program is to recapture the support of younger voters, particularly those who may have shifted towards conservative candidates in recent electoral cycles. Faiz Shakir, the executive director of More Perfect Union, explained this strategy to the New York Times, expressing hope that "an economic populist movement for the next generation will start through More Perfect Union on campuses."
The Established Conservative Rival
Turning Point USA, the group being directly challenged, was co-founded by Charlie Kirk in 2012. It is dedicated to identifying, educating, training, and organizing students to promote principles of freedom. The organization boasts a formidable presence on more than 3,500 campuses across the United States, describing its mission as building "the most organized, active, and powerful conservative grassroots activist network on high school and college campuses across the country."
Charlie Kirk was renowned for his campus tours and the "Prove Me Wrong" debate series, where he invited students to challenge his conservative viewpoints. Tragically, Kirk was killed in September 2025 while speaking at a debate event on the campus of Utah Valley University. The organization also maintains a wide network of influential conservative contributors, including activists such as Benny Johnson, Jack Posobiec, and Riley Gaines.
The Independent has reached out to both More Perfect Union and Turning Point USA for further comment on this emerging rivalry. The launch of More Perfect University marks a significant escalation in the battle for the hearts and minds of young Americans on college campuses, setting the stage for a renewed ideological contest ahead of future elections.
