Sir Ian Botham Slams Labour Government on Immigration and Covid Lockdowns
Ian Botham's scathing attack on Labour government

Cricket Legend's Political Broadside

Sir Ian Botham, the legendary England cricketer, has launched a stinging critique of the Labour government, questioning its policies on immigration and its handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. The celebrated all-rounder, who turned 70, did not hold back in his assessment of the current political landscape, suggesting the public is rightfully angry with the new administration.

Botham's Critique: Manifesto Breach and Immigration

In a candid interview with The Telegraph, Botham expressed his disillusionment. 'If you rip up your manifesto almost as soon as you get elected, a lot of people will be angry,' he stated. He urged the government to focus on getting the country back on its feet, but voiced strong concerns about the UK's border controls. 'At the moment, we’re just a golden ticket, with no due diligence done on most of the people who come in on the boats,' he claimed, highlighting his views on small boat crossings.

Despite being a lifelong Conservative, Botham was critical of his own party's recent performance, suggesting they had 'got this horribly wrong'. He predicted that the Reform party would perform well in the upcoming local elections, indicating a significant shift in the political mood.

On Lockdowns and The Monarchy

The former cricketer also revisited the government's response to the coronavirus, arguing that lockdowns were a result of 'scaremongering' which compared Covid-19 to the 'bubonic plague'. Furthermore, Botham delivered a robust defence of the monarchy. He stated that anti-monarchists should 'p*** off and go somewhere else if they don't like it', adding that 'The monarchy is one of our greatest exports.' He emphasised the cultural and tourist importance of royal residences like Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace, describing them as a vital part of the nation's heritage that must be protected.

The Ben Stokes Feud and Life After Cricket

Since his departure from Sky Sports in 2019, Botham has maintained a lower public profile, though he was seen in the Royal Box at Wimbledon last summer. He remains active as chairman of Durham County Cricket Club, runs his own charity, and operates a successful wine business.

He recently found himself in the news after criticising the England cricket team's preparation for the Ashes tour, calling the decision not to play state sides 'bordering on arrogance'. This drew a sharp retort from current England captain Ben Stokes, who labelled Botham a 'has-been'. Stokes defended the team's modern preparation methods, stating that the packed international schedule makes it impossible to tour as teams did in the past.
