Michael Carrick Reveals Long-Term Aim for Kobbie Mainoo at Man United
Carrick Sets Long-Term Goal for Mainoo at Man United

Michael Carrick has expressed his delight after Kobbie Mainoo signed a new five-year contract with Manchester United, stating that the midfielder epitomises the club's values. The 21-year-old England international committed his future to Old Trafford until 2031, a move that Carrick described as a significant boost for the team.

Carrick's Praise for Mainoo

Speaking to the media, Carrick said: "I've been hugely impressed with Kobbie since I've been here. I've known him quite some time in different capacities. He epitomises this football club, young players coming through the academy, living and breathing the club and coming through with real talent. In the last couple of games, he's been fantastic. Everyone is over the moon with that, including me because he deserves it."

Mainoo's career at United had stalled earlier this season under previous manager Ruben Amorim, but Carrick's return in January revitalised the midfielder. Since then, Mainoo has been a key figure in United's push for Champions League qualification.

Long-Term Ambitions

Carrick, who has overseen Mainoo's resurgence, hinted at even greater aspirations for the player. "Hopefully he's here for a long time and part of a successful team that wins trophies. That has to be the aim, it's not going to be straightforward but that's the challenge. For Kobbie to keep pushing and keep improving. We want to be competing for the biggest of trophies," he added.

Mainoo has already tasted success, scoring in an FA Cup final victory for United, and Carrick believes he can achieve more silverware in the years ahead.

Team News Ahead of Liverpool Clash

United host Liverpool on Sunday, and Carrick provided an update on injuries. Matheus Cunha, who missed Monday's win over Brentford, is expected to return after doing some training. However, defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez are unavailable due to injury and suspension, respectively. "Matheus has done a little bit of work so we're hopeful. Mata is still a bit further and not involved in the game," Carrick confirmed.
