People in Wales are 'typically more generous' in giving to charities than those in other UK nations, according to the Community Foundation in Wales (CFiW). Despite having the smallest number of millionaires, 60% of the Welsh population donates to charities, the highest proportion in the UK.
CFiW chief executive Richard Williams said: 'What the stats show is people in Wales are typically more generous than the rest of the UK. We're not a wealthy nation but people here like supporting charity.' The average gift size in Wales is £23.50, £11 lower than the UK average.
The findings come as a UK Community Foundations conference begins in Cardiff, focusing on funding opportunities to strengthen communities. CFiW hopes to inspire growth in philanthropy, particularly as public service cuts and Brexit loom. 'The need and demand for charitable support in Wales is really high,' Williams added.
CFiW figures also show that more children and over-65s in Wales live in poverty compared to the UK average. Last year, the organisation gave £2.6m in grants to community groups. Over 350 experts from across the UK and Europe are attending the conference at the Royal College of Music and Drama in Cardiff.
