Two Labour MPs Could Challenge Andy Burnham's PM Bid, Not Rayner or Miliband
Two Labour MPs Could Challenge Andy Burnham's PM Bid

Andy Burnham's bid to become Prime Minister could be thwarted by a last-minute challenge from within his own Labour Party, with two MPs reportedly weighing up leadership bids. Following his victory in the Makerfield by-election, Burnham confirmed he would seek to replace Sir Keir Starmer. However, rather than a smooth coronation, backbenchers and a Starmer loyalist may force a contest.

Potential Challengers Emerge

Senior Cabinet minister Darren Jones, viewed as loyal to Sir Keir, is said to be considering a run. Alongside him is Al Carns, a decorated veteran who resigned as defence minister last week over objections to inadequate funding for the Defence Investment Plan (Dip). That plan is now expected to be delayed further, leaving the final decision to the next Prime Minister.

Nomination Requirements

Plotters must declare by July, with nominations opening on the 9th. Each candidate needs the backing of 81 Labour MPs to stand. Darren Jones attended a 'class photo' with Burnham but is reportedly not ruling out a challenge, though he may lack sufficient MP support.

Wes Streeting, who initially wanted the job himself but later backed Burnham, urged others to do the same. Rivals object to a coronation, arguing Burnham's ideas—which he has been vague about—should face public scrutiny.
