The Thomas brothers—Adam, Ryan, and Scott—have long been familiar faces on British television, known for their cheeky charm and reality TV appearances. However, behind the scenes, their journey to fame has been fraught with personal struggles, financial troubles, and controversial behaviour.
I'm a Celebrity Fallout
The recent finale of I'm a Celebrity... South Africa erupted into a dramatic confrontation between winner Adam Thomas and former footballer Jimmy Bullard. The clash, described by viewers as resembling Jerry Springer, occurred as hosts Ant and Dec prepared to announce the winner. Bullard accused Adam of being “aggressive, abusive, and intimidating” after he withdrew from a trial that jeopardised Adam’s place in the jungle. Adam’s campmates saved him at the last minute, but not before a heated row.
Bullard claimed the show failed to broadcast footage of Adam using expletives, including the C-word. Ant countered that such language was unbroadcastable. Fellow campmate Sinitta described Adam’s outburst as “uncomfortable and disturbing,” stating she felt visibly upset and shaken. “It was very explosive, very aggressive,” she told The Sun. “I was looking around at everybody like: ‘Somebody do something!’ Screaming F bombs and C bombs repeatedly in an angry and explosive way is abusive and aggressive.”
Industry Reputation
The brothers have a reputation for being both hardworking and ruthless, according to PR expert Mayah Riaz. “In terms of the Thomas brothers' wider reputation, there's always been this dual narrative in the industry,” she said. “On one hand, they're known as grafters, very driven, very committed to their careers. On the other hand, that same drive can be interpreted by some as being ruthless or overly competitive.” Sources claim the trio have powerful connections in Manchester, including a close friendship with PrettyLittleThing CEO Umar Kamani. Ryan was best man at Kamani’s wedding, and the brothers often holiday with him. “Their TV personas are all very friendly, but in their personal lives, they can be pretty ambitious,” a source said.
Personal Struggles
Ryan Thomas, best known for playing Jason Grimshaw on Coronation Street, filed for bankruptcy in 2013 due to an unpaid £40,000 tax bill. His relationship with former co-star Tina O’Brien has been rocky; the couple split in 2009, with Tina claiming Ryan told her she “didn’t do it for him anymore.” Tensions escalated in 2022 when Tina allegedly smashed Ryan’s car with a baseball bat over disagreements about their daughter Scarlett’s education. Scott Thomas, a former Love Island contestant, has spoken openly about his gambling addiction, which began during his university years. He recalled waiting outside a casino in the freezing cold, desperate to win back lost money. “I got to the point where I was lying to people about where I was. I borrowed thousands from my friends and family to the point where I couldn't borrow any more, and I lost everything,” he said.
Editing Allegations
Following the finale, actor John Barrowman accused ITV of editing the show to make Adam look good, calling it “a crisis.” He wrote on X: “Editing to make someone look good as a winner is really bad form.” ITV denied the claims, stating they showed “an accurate and fair representation of events.” Adam addressed the controversy on Instagram, saying: “I have realised that when people try to dim your light, it says more about them than it ever will about you.”
The Mirror has contacted ITV and representatives of the Thomas brothers and Umar Kamani for further comment.
