Eric Swalwell Pressured to Exit California Governor Race Amid Sexual Misconduct Allegations
Representative Eric Swalwell, a prominent Democratic candidate for California governor, is facing mounting pressure to withdraw from the race following multiple allegations of sexual misconduct from several women. The calls for his exit have intensified after a former staffer accused him of rape, leading to a swift withdrawal of support from key Democratic figures and organisations.
Detailed Allegations from Multiple Women
According to reports from the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN, at least four women have come forward with accusations against Swalwell. The most detailed account comes from a woman who began working in Swalwell's Castro Valley office in 2019 at age 21. She alleges that Swalwell, then 38, began messaging her on Snapchat, sending photos of his genitals and requesting nude photos in return.
The woman claims that during one incident, Swalwell attempted to kiss her, and in another, exposed himself in a parked car while asking for oral sex. She further alleges that after a night out where she became heavily intoxicated, she woke up naked in his hotel bed with physical evidence suggesting vaginal intercourse had occurred.
In 2024, after she had stopped working for him, the woman attended an awards ceremony in New York where Swalwell was being honoured. She claims they met for drinks afterward, she became extremely intoxicated, and Swalwell forced himself on her in a hotel room despite her telling him to stop. She reported vaginal bleeding and bruises the following morning.
Additional Accusations and Political Fallout
Other women have come forward with similar stories. One former staffer told CNN that Swalwell raped her when she was heavily intoxicated, leaving her bruised and bleeding. Another woman interested in Democratic politics accused him of touching her leg and kissing her without consent in a public bar. Two additional women reported receiving unsolicited nude photos and sexual messages from Swalwell on Snapchat.
The allegations have triggered a significant political backlash. Several prominent Democrats have withdrawn their endorsements, including Senators Adam Schiff and Ruben Gallego. House Democratic leadership, including Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, has called for Swalwell to end his campaign immediately. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has suggested he withdraw to allow for proper investigation.
Swalwell's Response and Campaign Impact
Swalwell has vehemently denied all allegations, calling them "false" and suggesting they are politically motivated ahead of California's June 2 primary election. In a statement, he said, "For nearly 20 years, I have served the public — as a prosecutor and a congressman and have always protected women. I will defend myself with the facts and where necessary bring legal action."
His attorney has denied that Swalwell ever had nonconsensual sex with any woman or sexual relations with staff members. Despite these denials, the campaign has suffered substantial damage. Both of Swalwell's campaign co-chairs, Representatives Jimmy Gomez and Adam Gray, have withdrawn their support. Major labour groups including SEIU California and the California Teachers Association have either suspended campaign activities or rescinded their endorsements entirely.
Broader Implications and Next Steps
The situation highlights ongoing challenges within political campaigns regarding allegations of sexual misconduct and how they are addressed. The women coming forward have been commended for their courage by multiple Democratic leaders, who have emphasised the importance of taking such allegations seriously and ensuring accountability.
As California's primary election approaches on June 2, the pressure on Swalwell continues to mount. The calls for investigation and transparency remain central to the discourse, with many arguing that a gubernatorial campaign is not the appropriate context for addressing such serious allegations. The political future of one of California's leading Democratic candidates now hangs in the balance as these disturbing claims are investigated and debated.
